Invitation: Is there a future for Egypt’s human rights strategy?

In Human Rights Dissemination Program, Salon Ibn Rushd by CIHRS

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS) is honored to invite you to attend the Salon Ibn Rushd’s monthly webinar on Monday 20 September, 6 PM Cairo time (12 N Washington time). This month’s meeting is titled:  “Is there a future for Egypt’s human rights strategy?” and the discussion will last an hour and a half.

On  11 September, Egyptian president Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi announced the launch of the government’s “National Human Rights Strategy.” Views differ on the feasibility and practical implications of the strategy. While some consider it the beginning of a new phase representing qualitative change in the Egyptian government’s human rights policies, others did not find the strategy to be indicative of a genuine political will to improve the country’s abysmal human rights situation.

On the heels of Sisi’s announcement, the Salon Ibn Rushd meeting on Monday will discuss the credibility and feasibility of this strategy in regards to improving the human rights situation in Egypt. The discussion will be led by:

  • Mohamed Anwar el-Sadat: Head of the Reform and Development Party, and General Coordinator of the “International Dialogue” group
  • Dr.Michele Dunne: Director of the Middle East Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
  • Bahey eldin Hassan: Director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies (CIHRS)

The meeting is moderated by Professor of Political Science at Dartmouth College, USA; Dr. Ezzedine Fishere.

You can join the discussion by registering at the following link (interpretation will be available): https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_UGEqi1vPQZ-Yfemj_2oVOA
